Questions About The Spreadsheets?

InvestExcel.net contains many free spreadsheets across all sectors of personal finance, investment analysis, technical trading and more. I hope you enjoy using them and they give you real value.

I have spent hundreds of hours (over a thousand) developing these resources. If you gain value from any of these spreadsheets then please

  • link to investexcel.net from your blog or website
  • like the Facebook group (I don’t post unnecessary updates, stupid cat pictures or other rubbish. I only provide updates about new free spreadsheets).

I have many more spreadsheets and resources to publish, and I’d love to keep in touch with you!

Many people have technical questions about my spreadsheets. This includes questions like

  • It doesn’t work on my system. Why?
  • It gives me results I don’t understand. Why?
  • Can you make a quick alteration?
  • It doesn’t work for this stock ticker. Why?

If you have questions like this, then

  • leave a comment on the download page for the spreadsheet or leave a comment on the facebook group
  • do not immediately email me straight off the mark (if I need more information, then I will ask you to email me)

I prioritize questions from people who have linked to investexcel.net from their blog or website.

For any other questions (perhaps you want to engage me on a consulting project or pay for an unlocked spreadsheet), then email me.

  1. Hi,

I like your excel tools. I need a bulk downloader for perferred securities. The yahoo bulk downloader does not handle all perferred securities, however your Google single quote does. Preferreds sometimes have an suffix, such as MER-D, MER-E, MER-F which are different issues from Merrill Lynch.

Is this something you can develop? I need it to bring back historical day close for approximately 100 symbols,

    Thanks! Cal

  2. Hi Samir,

I’m developing a simple historical stock price spreadsheet, and would like to add historical currency exchange rates so that foreign stocks can be included. I’m using Yahoo as a source for historical stock prices, but it doesn’t look like they have historical currency data. What source did you use for your bulk Forex spreadsheet? Given that, I think I can figure out how to get the data. Your help would be appreciated.

If I’m still stymied, what is your fee for opening up the VBA project for your Forex spreadsheet?

    Thanks,
    Dean Frazier

  3. Hi,

the bulk stock quote downloader is really cool. Here is my question:
I would love to generate csv. files, always with the same file name (no date in the name) with exactly the following header:
    Date,Open,High,Low,Close,Volume,Other
Right now, there are two header lines in your file, one with the stock name, the second with the yahoo finance header.
This should be replace by just the header line mentioned above. Would this be possible? Happy to donate/pay for this feature. I know it is easy to implement, but I am not so familiar with VBA etc.

This solution would enable me to import eod yahoo finance data into Tradestation…. Cool feature, which I am sure more people would be interested in.

    Best,

    Paul

  4. I love your Bulk Dividend Analyzer!
Along these lines — do you have something similar to display the “Payout Ratio” (Dividends divided by free cash flow)?

    Sincerely,

  5. Hi Samir,

thanks a lot for this work. Your bulk stock quote downloader is really great. I had been using it but off late have been facing few problems:

    1) In your excel file ‘ Yahoo Finance stock quotes”, i want to download data for about 160 stocks. However, it allows me to take only 90 stocks. If i enter more stocks and click “Get Bulk Quotes” , it takes me to debugger. Is there some way to increase the number of stocks

    2) In your excel file”Google finance stock quotes”, i tried to download quotes for indian stock but its not working. Does it not work with Indian stocks like SBIN, SOUTHBANK etc.

could you please help me with this. would be really kind of you.

    Thanks,
    Neeraj

  6. Samir,

I would love to be able to download financial ratio data for stocks such as Sales, Cash Flow, Book Value, P/E, PEG, Price/Book, Price/Sales, ROE, ROA, ROI, ROIC, Gross Margin, Operating Margin, Net Profit Margin, Quick Ratio, Current Ratio, Long-Term Debt/Equity, Total Debt/Equity, etc., a total of more than 28. I use these ratios, along with other imformation, to create a comosite score for each stock. I have been doing this manually into Excel 2013 for over 300 stocks. Is there anyway to automate this so that I can download quaterly updated information. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  9. you could adapt to multiple stock quote downloader stock market in Argentina?

    Hi Samir
I desire to acquire “multiple stock quote downloader” but I need to adapt my country Merval with identical performance to the original Excel spreadsheet. I await your answer.

    • The spreadsheet only works for tickers that have programmatic access via Yahoo Finance. If Yahoo Finance does not allow programmatic access for Argentine tickers, then you’re out of luck

  10. Hello Samir,
Thank you for sharing your expertise. I am running your bulk stock downloader today – 2016-01-02 – for 10 year historical results on ‘m’ basis. The data, unfortunately, stops at 2015-12-01 even though I set the ‘end date’ at 2015-12-31. When I change to ‘d’ the data includes this missing data. Is there something I should be doing differently? Again,
    Thank you!

  11. The “calculating-a-sharpe-optimal-portfolio-with-excel” sheet has been very helpful.
Could you also create a workbook for calculating a Sortino Optimal Portfolio, so that it doesn’t penalize upside volatility?

The inputs are similar to the Sharpe version such as returns of the stocks and correlations between them.

    Thank you very much.

  12. Hi,

just found your homepage- its quite nice and useful. However, one feature caught my attention, which is your formula-bar:

Instead of “=(1+F4/$G$5) ..whatever” your sheets display “=(1+FX_Rate/Interest)..”.

How did you do that :-)? I didn’t found any code in your VBA background, so im quite curious…

    • Open spreadsheet, Select Formula ribbon > Manage Name

You will see all labeled cells in the spreadsheet. FX_Rate will appear, select it and you will see the cell it references. Pretty straight forward.

But I have one question: How to download history data for S&P 500 index. I tried .INX but it does not work.

  14. Hi,

In regard to the Bulk Stock Quote Downloader for Google Finance when using Symbol lookup code ASX:BHP for stocks on the Australian Market it does not work. Is this market supported or am I using the wrong code syntax? Same for .DJI, INX .
